Color Your World

I love home decor that is bright and full of life. These photographs by Rachel Whiting, are so perfectly vintage and feminine. I imagine the person who lives here is an artist in a small flat in an old world city. I especially love the pink bike!

Four Grocery Store Bouquets = Five Lovely Arrangements

I try to always keep fresh flowers in most rooms of my apartment all the time. I read in Apartment Therapy: The Eight Step Home Cure by Maxwell Gillingham Ryan of Apartment Therapy (one of my top five blogs ever):

Buying Fresh flowers each week is an affordable luxury that will instantly enliven and beautify your home. It also sets a standard for attention to detail that will inspire you each day on your return home.

So, since reading this I try very hard to keep fresh flowers in all of the most-used rooms in my apartment (Living Room, Bedroom (it’s where I write), Dining Room and yes, even the bathroom. It really makes a huge difference in the way I feel in my house. I truly don’t obsessively fuss over the dog hair, dust and general clutter nearly as much when I have fresh flowers. The apartment immediately feels more beautiful and natural.

I go grocery shopping about once every 10 days or so, and I always try to just pick up a couple of bundles there to mix and match around the apartment. So, today I’m going to show you how I arranged my flowers (because I think this time they turned out extra lovely).

So, I bought:

2 Bundles of Baby’s Breathe

1 Bundle of Little Daisy/Poppy Flowers

1 Bundle of Thin Small Bud Flowers (I don’t know what they’re called… embarrassing).

All are white-ish and each were $4.

And this is what I got:

I always put this tiny little vase (it’s actually a glass from my favorite bar) in the bathroom with just a few stems that I normally cut way too short.

I put this more medium vase (actually a carafe from the attic of a restaurant I used to work in) in the bedroom with a few more stem in it.

This small cylinder vase pretty much always goes in the middle of the kitchen table. I always sort of end up making it look like a bouquet, although that is never my intention.

This next one is my pride and joy of this whole venture. I normally put this vase in the living room on the tray I keep on the coffee table. I love the way this arrangement turned out. It’s totally gorgeous!

The last one was just the left overs. I normally don’t do anything in the kitchen, cause I feel like it creates more clutter on my surfaces. But, a few little baby’s breathe stems is nothing to do.

This all may seem sort of silly or superficial. But, it really does create a much more creative and beautiful feeling in my home. As I sit here and write this I feel peaceful. And, what more can you want from your home?

New Apartment… No Time…

Hello everyone! I’m so sorry I’ve been gone so long. I’ve really had a crazy week. My husband and I just moved into a new apartment and man is that a lot of work. I have a hard time relaxing with all the boxes everywhere, so literally all of my time in the last two days that was not spent working or sleeping I’ve been packing, moving and then unpacking it all again. I’m thrilled to be in the new place. It is so big compared to my last tiny dwelling. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can get somethings organized, just so you all can get an idea of what I’m tackling here.

But, in the mean time, here are a few of the most inspiring living rooms I’ve come across.

Enjoy!

Love Pink, I just wish my husband did too. Sign.

I hope you kinda get the similarities in all of these photos. I am thrilled by really vintage shapes and woods. I love bright, bold and sometimes almost Latin inspired colors. And I love a very clean base to put it all on. It all comes together very happy and fun while still being very relaxed and clean.

DIY Paper Pin Wheels

Most people use these paper pinwheels as a wedding backdrop or in a mobile in a child’s room. I however am attempting to use them as grown up apartment home decor. So far, I really love them.

All You Need:

Scrapbook Paper or Any Other Fun Paper  (2 12 x12 sheets or 3 8×11 for each wheel)

A box cutter, Xacto Knife, or really good sizors

A Stapeler or Good Glue like Rubber Cement

String or Long Pins to hang them

Step One:

Fold The Paper Back and Forth on the Long Side

Step 2:

Fold the strip in half, and Cut your design into the ends and middle

Step Three:

Staple or glue all the ends together so that the staples are to the back.

Step 4:

Hang them Up! I know a lot of people prefer stringing the wheels, but that seemed like extra work to me. I prefer to pin them where I like them. I used corsage pins so that the wheels stand away from the wall a little bit, which makes it easier to layer them.

This project is over all very easy, although a bit time consuming. I’m going to add many more, and try to find some old books that I can use pages from. I am having a great time with this project so far! All of the supplies have only cost me $32 all together (I didn’t have to buy staples or the box cutter though).

Let me know if you have any questions about this process. I’ll keep updating as I add to the wall. I am going to paint the console table under the mirror the same orange. YAY! So excited!

Color Inspiration for my Living Room

Those of you who know me know that our current apartment is a hodge podge of college furniture mixed with hand me downs and free finds. There are probably only three pieces of furniture in the whole apartment that we would like to keep for a while (those three are my bedroom furniture made by my Daddy). So, in an attempt to fix up the old crappy college stuff and hand me downs I am looking for a color scheme for the living room. Thoughts are appreciated.

French Gray, White, Poppy Red and Mink

Icey Vintage Gray, French Blue and Egg Shell

White, Cream, French Gray, Sunny Yellow and Slate Blue

Lime, Poppy Red, Merigold, and White

Sky, White and Cherry

What Color Should I Paint This?

Help, I can’t decide what color to paint the console table in our living room. Too broke to buy a new one, I’m going to paint it and add a new knob to the drawer.

Here is the piece.

My initial thought was to paint it white, for a very clean traditional look with maybe a funky knob. But, then I started looking around and I have been thinking about these colors… They kinda go with a vintage map I have hanging near the console table. The walls are a bluish grayish color…

Here is the wall art I have hanging near the table.

My First DIY- Barstools left by past tennents transformed

YAY! I am admitably proud of myself for this! I had these two TERRIBLE black bar stools that were left in my apartment by the previous tennent and I put up with them for a whole year because I had nothing to replace them with and no energy to redo them with the wedding chaos. So FINALLY they are better!

So I bought some really pretty fabric and simply stabled it around the existing pleather.

Then I spreay painted them silver. I liked the satin nickle finish by Rustoleum better than what I ended up with. But the satin nickle was twice the price for half the paint.

My dog, Alli, likes them too.

Got to love the crap left by the past tennents.
